Gratitude – A powerful catalyst for happiness

gratitude

One of the fundamental reasons for all our pain and suffering is the fact that we tend to focus too much on things that we perceive to be lacking in our lives. Shifting our focus to what we actually have is an extraordinarily simple and effective way to boost our feelings of contentment, abundance, and happiness.

We often take for granted the simple joys of life. For instance, the fact that you’re reading this blog means that it is very likely that your answer to the following questions should be a “Yes” –

  1. Do you have the ability to see?
  2. Have you received some form of education?
  3. Do you have a functioning brain that can read and think?
  4. Do you have access to the internet?

Now, take a moment to realize that a significant population of Earth can’t say “Yes” to one or more of the above questions.

We all have countless blessings from God. It is easy to underestimate the power of being grateful for those blessings. Maintaining a daily gratitude journal is a quick and easy way to practically start this new way of living. All we need to do is list down 3 or 4 things, people, or situations that we are grateful for (e.g., 1) Eyes 2) The Sun, 3) A comfortable bed to sleep on). Taking out 5 minutes of our time every day to thank God in this manner, preferably in the Amrit Vela (3 hours in the morning, starting from 2 hours before sunrise till 1 hour after sunrise), can spark a miraculous turnaround in our lives. The pain-inducing thought “I don’t have enough” will suddenly start transforming into a new peaceful and blissful thought – “whatever I have IS enough”. This change in attitude is enough to turn anyone from being “poor” to being “rich” and happy, irrespective of their wealth, possessions, geographical location, quality of relationships, or any other external factor.

“He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.”

Epictetus (Greek Philosopher)
